If you want to get some new garden furniture, the first thing to do is think about the styles of garden furniture that would suit your garden and your requirements. If you already have an idea of what you would like, you are already half way there, otherwise you will have to do some investigation on the various styles of garden furniture

This research can be done on line quite easily by typing ‘garden furniture’ into Google, but if you would prefer more information on the furniture, you could get a few magazines on gardening and landscaping. If you rather a more hands-on approach, you can go around the home improvement stores and the garden centres.

In fact, you will have to go to the shops sooner or later anyway unless you intend buying on line too. I personally like to do some exploration on the Internet first and then use the knowledge that I gleaned from there to make informed decisions in the shop. I do not really trust the photos. I want to see and touch the garden furniture and check the joints and finish.

Once you get to the garden centre, you will come across different styles of garden furniture including: farmhouse or rustic, contemporary or modern, resort or poolside and these can be made from hardwood, softwood, plastic or metal.

Hardwood is by far the most popular material for garden furniture and most people prefer the farmhouse style, although there are some fantastic modern styles too.

No matter which style you prefer or what it is manufactured of the number one best piece of advice is to get the best quality that you can afford. This is true of most items you can buy, but I think that it is especially true of garden furniture because it will have a very hard life. Just imagine it: snow, rain, heat; temperatures varying from -5c to + 35c and varying humidity.

Cheap plastic cannot put up with those conditions. I used to buy cheap plastic and had to replace it every eighteen months. Then I bought expensive plastic and I still have some of that but in essence it only lasted three years. I have seen metal garden furniture and it always rusts, even if it is plastic coated, enamelled or painted. Softwood lasts well, but it will rot after approximately five years even if it is quite well taken care of.

The only garden furniture that I have ever had or seen at friends’ houses that lasts and looks good all that time is hardwood. There is a broad selection of hardwoods. There are native hardwoods like oak, cherry, walnut, maple and beech and foreign hardwoods like mahogany and teak. These hardwoods can also be stained to practically any colour although most people prefer the natural look.

Hardwood garden furniture is simple to maintain as well: just rub it over with linseed oil once or twice a year. If you carry out this simple maintenance procedure the timber will not dry out and it will resist the elements for twenty years or more ensuring that you get maximum value for money from this, the finest of all the styles of garden furniture.

The victim can be given an electric shock by coming into contact with a live wire or by the electricity from a live source arcing out – in essence finding earth through that person’s body. Most electric shocks are not serious and are over before you know that it has happened yet they are frightening afterwards.

A fall resulting from a mild electric shock probably has greater potential to be fatal than the shock itself. For example, if you were changing a light bulb from a chair and you reckoned that the power was off, yet it was not, you might receive a short sharp shock, and it could make you to fall off the ladder and break your neck.

On the other hand, high voltage electric shocks can result in burns deep in human tissue whilst leaving just minor signs of the injury on the outside. It is very important not to get complacent about electricity, because, like the open sea, it does not suffer fools gladly. Here are a couple of electrical safety tips to help keep you safe.

6] If you are using any apparatus that produces heat or strong light, do not direct it on anything that might catch fire.

7] Install fast-reacting circuit breakers between your apparatus and the source of electricity to minimize the shock that you might get. These devices detect a faulty earth and turn the appliance off in milliseconds.

If your appliance or electrical equipment has a button for testing the earth, use it each day and if you are going to work on a light socket, an electrical socket or the fuse box, test it first with one of those electrical screwdrivers with a small bulb in it. You poke it into the circuitry and the bulb lights up, you have just had a narrow escape. Be more cautious next time!

Rather than applying synthetic repellents, natural repellents can be made by combining different natural oils in precise concentrations depending on the type of mosquito. Citronella oil, lemon eucalyptus, clove oil, cedar oil, lemongrass oil, rosemary oil and cinnamon oil are the most popular oils used as natural mosquito repellents. The refined form of oil of Lemon eucalyptus is a very effectual insect repellent.

Mosquito coils i.e. mosquito-repelling incense, is also commonly used in Asia, South America and Africa. It is usually a coil manufactured of Pyrethrum powder, shaped into a spiral. Modern day mosquito-repelling coils burn for around eight hours without a flame.

Their ability to repel mosquitoes is very robust; it is also cheap and easy to use. Health and safety worries are of immense importance when using such coils. The spark from the coil could ignite a fire and the smoke contains formaldehyde which is very harmful to health.

Children and pregnant women ought to use mosquito repellents very cautiously. The label on the repellent must be read very carefully before use and the directions should be followed precisely. Mosquito repellents should be kept out of the reach of children because of their deleterious effects on health.

A History Of Stained Glass

No one actually knows when stained glass was first invented because it happened before people started recording history. However, some historians reckon that it was first used as a luxury in the homes of affluent Romans in the first century AD. Stained glass was eventually acclaimed as an art form in the fourth century as Christians started to worship candidly and to construct elaborate churches in which to celebrate their religion.

On the other hand, some historians demonstrate that there are signs in pre-Christian ruins that suggest that pagans used stained glass in their rites. Although we will probably never really know the start of stained glass, it is fairly clear that the spread of Christianity is directly related to the spread of use of stained glass.

The Gothic Era commenced in the 12th Century and stained glass windows became an essential element in the design of cathedrals. It really all started with the pioneering style of the St. Denis, France, where stained glass windows were used to convey light into the church itself and into the minds of its worshipers. Sadly, most of the stained glass in the St. Denis Cathedral was destroyed in the course of the French Revolution, but there are a few pieces left and even some complete windows on exhibit in Europe.

Gothic style stained glass was composed of strong lines, but these gradually went out of fashion as the Renaissance commenced. During the Renaissance, artisans showed greater detail and more delicate colouring in order to add to the realism. Stained glass windows became more like paintings on glass than architectural elements and some of the notable elements such as lead lines disappeared. Because of the problems in expressing the great detail essential to the Renaissance era, the old style, which was true stained glass almost died out.

Since stained glass was used by and large by the Catholic Church, much of the work was smashed during the reign of King Henry VIII after his split with the Pope. However, not only old stained glass windows were damaged, but many of the glass making works were sabotaged too. However, religious strife was not the only cause of the decline of stained glass.

The style of the Baroque period was for more detailed murals, which necessitated the use of clear glass. Therefore, many of the remaining stained glass windows were permitted to decay, and furthermore not many new stained glass windows were produced. In the late 17th century, the public mood returned to the Gothic style of architecture, which produced a renewed interest in stained glass windows.

Artisans continued to paint directly onto the glass at first, but later tried to imitate the old leaden frames of medieval times. However, since the original techniques had not been used for such a long time, they had become forgotten and the artisans of the period were unable to recreate the exact styles prevailing in Gothic stained glass.

During the 19th century, La Farge and Tiffany created new variations of stained glass. La Farge was interested in window designs, while Tiffany went into new areas like the Tiffany lamp shade.

These days, stained glass artists are not constricted by religious styles, although much of the work they do involves refurbishment. Modern stained glass is also used as the centre pane in front doors, especially uPVC doors, by rich and poor equally in the West.

Travelling By Train

Over the last ten years there has been a return to train travel, particularly in the United States. This might have something to do with nostalgia and romance, but most analysts put it down to a result of the in-flight bombing of Twin Towers on 9/11/2001.

The government’s and the airlines’ response to those acts of terrorism have resulted in massive hikes in the degree of security at airports and justly so, but travellers are also put off by the lengthy queues and intrusive searches at airports. This difficulty is even worse at busy airports and during vacation periods such as when schools are off.

Car travel is also an alternative, but then you have to do your own driving and that brings its own issues, especially if you are with children and especially if you are a single parent. Apart from that, travelling by train is a holiday in its own right. Your holiday starts the minute you put your bags in the rack and find your seat.

Once you have found your seat, given the kids a colouring book and a can of soda, you can sit back, relax and just snooze or look out of the window at the scenery whizzing past. Most of your problems are over until you get to where you are going. Your kids cannot get lost or wander off and they are very safe from predators.

Furthermore, trains seats are usually much more roomy than similar airline seats. Economy seats in a train are much more comfortable than economy seats in an airplane. You can also stand up and walk around which makes long journeys much more comfortable.

The backdrop is also better from a train than a plane. After all, clouds are clouds are clouds, but you can see all kinds of things out of the window of a train. There are also sleeping and dining carriages to break up the journey, but there is normally also attendant service in your seat, if that is what you would like. Simply push the button and someone will come to take your order.

Have you heard of the Orient Express, the Flying Scotsman or the Trans-Siberian Express? What romantic visions they summon up. Contemporary trains may not have the nostalgia or the steam locomotives of the Thirties, but they are still fantastic to travel on.

You can book your seats on a train journey much the same as you would on a plane, which means that if you stand up to go to the bathroom or dining carriage, your seat will still be unoccupied when you get back. This is a huge plus point, because it is annoying when someone takes your seat.

The next time that you make a decision to go away, think again about travelling by train. You can leave your car at the station or you can even take it with you on the train, if you like. You will not regret having given the rail network a chance, because the likelihood are that you have forgotten how handy and inexpensive they are.

Lego An Ageless Toy For Children Of All Ages

Lego sets have come a long way since my brothers and I had Lego sets in the UK. Lego UK is an off-shoot of the original Danish firm known as Lego, however, Lego UK may just as well be thought of as a separate company in its own right. Nowadays Lego sets are a great deal more than just boxes of interlocking building blocks, Lego sets are themed now to make them more applicable to a child’s particular interests. Lego is seeing a renaissance.

The name ‘Lego’ is not a real word, not even in Danish. Rather it is an acronym of two Danish words “leg godt”, which mean “play well”. It is Lego Group’s name and part of the emblem of the Lego Group.

Train Trips from San Francisco

One of the greatest things about staying in San Francisco is the close proximity to some fantastic attractions. You can lodge in one city yet visit several. You get not only the amenities of the city, but the beauty of nature is not far away from almost any point within the city. In fact, a short train ride will take you quickly to some nearby attractions that are definitely worth checking out.

One of the first train tours I want to talk about is not only a train tour but a bus and train tour. This trip goes from San Francisco to Yosemite Park. This trip involves transfers back and forth from bus to train but offers some stunning scenery and the ability to get pleasure from it without the anxiety of driving, rest stops and the need to stretch your legs.

Sometimes a little inconvenience is worth a lot more convenience later in your trip. The train portion of the tour lasts about three hours and you get to spend three hours in Yosemite. For some it is not worth the hassle and for others it is just what the doctor ordered – time to rest and relax while on the way. This is by far the most complicated of the train tours heading out of San Francisco.

The second tour is to wine country. The beauty of these tours is in the fact that you can enjoy your wine tasting event without the anxiety of who is going to drive. Everyone in your group can enjoy the outing equally. Even more than that however, is that many tour groups have made the train ride itself more the event than the wine tasting.

With pastimes such as four course meals and Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre for your entertainment it is no wonder that this has turned out to be an occasion of choice for many visitors to San Francisco. While this may be a more than moderately pricey option, it is well worth the expense. You can always cut overheads somewhere else in San Francisco to make up for the expense.

Roaring Camp Railroads provides two train rides that are both equally tempting in hugely different ways. The first is a trip back in time. This is almost certainly my favorite. On this excursion you travel to the top of Bear Mountain while listening to yarns about Roaring Camp’s part. This train tour lasts for an hour and is great fun, particularly for the little ones.

The second offering by Roaring Camp Railroads is the Beach Train, which will take you to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. The round trip from Roaring Camp to Santa Cruz and back is about three hours and well worth every penny if you have a budding engineer among your children.

Perhaps the most magical of train excursions is the Christmas Train tour from Oakdale. This trip includes Santa, his elves and a little Christmas magic. What more could you ask for? Well, I suppose that that depends on whether you made the naughty list or the nice list. This train ride is magic for everyone that partakes, young and old alike will enjoy the magic that only Christmas can bring.

Whether you are a big kid, a little kid, or somewhere in between, I am ready to bet that the magic of a train ride has not been completely lost over the years. In fact, I am willing to bet that if you allow yourself to sit back and just enjoy yourself, you will enjoy the journey as much as the destination.

One immediate method you could use to cut the cost of your wedding favours is to give one to each couple or single, rather than one to everybody who comes. The first decision to make is how much can you afford in total and then divide that by the number of guests in total and then divide it by the number of couples and singles.

This system will make it easier for you to decide what you are going to do: get for everybody; get for couples and singles and keep the rest for something else or give to couples and singles but buy more expensive gifts. If you still find that there is not a lot of money to go around, you will need to look for lower-priced wedding favours. I will offer you a few ideas below to get you started.

Candles can be very successful, low-cost wedding favours. If you buy in bulk, you can get some really lovely candles at very affordable prices. You could get scented candles, maybe with the same smell as the spray the bride carried. You could also consider purchasing personalized ribbons to tie attractive bows around the candles and the ribbons could have your names and the wedding date on them.

Candy or chocolate is another kind of inexpensive wedding favour. There are many ways to go down this route. You can have the wrappers of popular candy bars custom-made; you could buy fairly expensive chocolate in bulk and wrap it up in a special way yourself or you could buy small boxes of gourmet chocolate.

Giving packets of flower or vegetable seeds is also an economical way of giving a useful wedding favour. Again, you could give seed packets of the flowers in the bride’s bouquet. The seed packets could be wrapped or boxed with your own special logo, names and wedding date. You could present them in a pot or tray too in order to make it even easier to sow the seeds.

A pen or pen and pencil set is also a reasonably inexpensive way of giving wedding favours. These pens can also display your wedding details such as names and date.

However, I am Welsh and so my favourite wedding favours are love spoons in miniature, say four inches long. Love spoons were given in Wales by a suitor to his beloved for hundreds of years and many love spoon carvers will make mini versions by hand for a small amount of money. These love spoon wedding favours can also be carved with the wedding details as they are typically made out of wood.

Another lovely touch is to insert a stamped, self addressed envelope to your wedding favour present, with a short note asking the recipient to get in touch with you soon, so that you do not let too much water go under the bridge.

The US Virgin Islands

The US Virgin Islands came into America’s possession in 1917 after Denmark sold the Danish West Indies to it for $25m in gold. At the time, the USA was worried that the Germans would gain control of the islands and use them as a base from which to launch attacks on America.

The status of the US Virgin Islands is one of an organized, unincorporated territory of the United States. This means the residents of the US Virgin Islands are US citizens, but cannot vote in US presidential elections. Therefore, US citizens do not need a passport to visit the US Virgin Islands.

The US Virgin Islands are part virgin Islands archipelago and are located in the Leeward islands of the Lesser Antilles along with the British Virgin Islands. The three main islands of this American territory are called Saint Croix, Saint John and Saint Thomas. There is also a much smaller island called Water Island. All together, there are about 60 islands with a total surface area of 133.73 square miles, although most of the islands are uninhabited.

The four main islands of the US Virgin Islands are known to their residents by nicknames. These are ‘Twin City’ (St. Croix); ‘Rock City’ (St. Thomas); ‘Love City’ (St. John) and ‘Small City’ (Water Island) and their total population was 108,612 in the 2000 census.

Since the 1960′s, the islands turned their focus from agriculture to heavy industry and tourism and the US Virgin Islands are a very popular destination for American tourists and honeymooners. It is very easy for Americans to get there because a passport is not required, the islands are only 1,730 miles east south-east of Miami, the currency is the US dollar and everybody speaks English.

The islands enjoy an arid, pleasant climate. The average temperature in the capital, Charlotte Amelie, is 33c in the summer and 30c in the winter. September to November are the wettest months and February and March are the driest. The USVI are subject to hurricanes. Hurricane Hugo in 1989 was particularly devastating, but the islands were also hit in 1998, 1999 and 2008.

Tourism is the industry that most of the islanders are engaged in and about 2,000,000 people visit every year, many of them on cruise liners. St Thomas and St Croix are the best equipped to deal with tourists offering hotels and resorts along with lovely beaches and fine restaurants. Water sports are the main activity, although tourists can also hire horses or jeeps to discover the interior of the US Virgin Islands.
