One may wonder why ice hockey is considered among most exciting games in the world. This is mostly because of players who move rapidly and hit the puck or cork at high speeds. Goal keepers have to protect themselves not only from the puck which is directed towards them, but from other players as well. If they are not suitably protected, they can be hit by either of them pretty badly. In order to protect their bodies from injury, they ought to purchase good quality ice hockey goalie equipment.

Chest protectors, elbow pads, helmets, gloves, leg pads, throat protectors etc are some of such equipments. Each one of these equipments protects a certain region of the body of the goalies. Quite importantly, there is nothing above the life of a player. Keeping this point in consideration, one should not compromise on quality of these equipments for saving money.

A chest protector has to protect chest, elbows, forearms and biceps of the goalies. It consists of specialized protective gear for these body-parts. It must be strong enough for ensuring sufficient protection and light enough for aiding in movement.

Direct shots, sticks and collision with other players can result in significant injury to their heads. Considering this point, their helmets should be special and comparatively stronger than that of rest of the players. Choice of helmets must be made after considering this point.

Throats of goal keepers are under threat from elbows and hockeys of their fellow players. They can be even hit by the puck when shots are taken from some distance. Besides that, there is a risk of abrasion caused by their helmets. Thus they should wear sufficient throat protection to protect their throats.

Special gloves are needed for stopping the puck while aiding wrist movement of the goal keepers. These gloves are equipped with wristbands to protect their wrists from shock. In addition, they need goal blockers for stopping the puck from entering into the net. One can purchase both these equipments depending on budget and desired level of protection.

Shin and calf are protected by leg pads. These pads tend to have quite a lot of padding which protects legs, knees, ankles, toes etc. Chances of shock and injury are reduced in a big way with their help.

In this way, ice hockey goalie equipment happens to save most parts of body of goalies. Hence it is necessary that they purchase good quality equipments from a dealer of good reputation. Online stores can also be checked out for widening range of options and for availing significant savings at the same time.

Lego An Ageless Toy For Children Of All Ages

Lego sets have come a long way since my brothers and I had Lego sets in the UK. Lego UK is an off-shoot of the original Danish firm known as Lego, however, Lego UK may just as well be thought of as a separate company in its own right. Nowadays Lego sets are a great deal more than just boxes of interlocking building blocks, Lego sets are themed now to make them more applicable to a child’s particular interests. Lego is seeing a renaissance.

The name ‘Lego’ is not a real word, not even in Danish. Rather it is an acronym of two Danish words “leg godt”, which mean “play well”. It is Lego Group’s name and part of the emblem of the Lego Group.

The Lego Group was the brain child of Ole Kirk Kristiansen in 1932 and the Lego company has remained in the Kristiansen family’s control until today. The current owner of the Lego Group is Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen, a grandchild of the firm’s founder.

Lego’s mission statement is the same the whole Lego Group worldwide and that is to:

?Inspire and develop the builders of tomorrow?

Lego UK explains this by saying that their ultimate objective is ‘to inspire and develop children to think creatively, reason systematically and release their potential to shape their own future – experiencing the endless human possibility’.

The Lego Group now has more than 130 subsidiaries and branches all over the world, one of which is Lego UK. From its humble beginnings in a small Danish carpentry workplace in Bilund, the Lego Group has become the fifth largest toy maker in the world, although it is still based in Bilund.

The fundamental building block of the Lego Group is the famous eight-stud Lego block, which has remained unchanged since 1958. In fact, it is unlikely to ever change since it has been calculated that there are over 900 million different methods of mixing just six of these blocks together.

More than 900 million different ways of combining merely six Lego building blocks of one size and one colour! Think about the potential if you give a child a box of Lego building blocks of different sizes and colours.

Lego takes education very seriously and since the Seventies, the Lego Group has extended its product assortment to include younger and older people, The Duplo block is for pre-school children and are large enough for small hands to manipulate and too substantial to swallow.

For older children, teenagers and adults, there are electric motors that can be built into models which can be controlled by computer. One famous British TV presenter contacted Lego for help in constructing a house from Lego to live in.

In fact, this full-size, twenty foot tall, house was built by 1,000 volunteers using 3,300,000 bricks and everything is made from Lego building blocks. Yes, everything, including a flushing toilet, a sink with taps, the cat and the bread bin.

Reenacted Moves In Wrestling

Wrestling moves are not straight-forward, as if you are not looking closely, you might believe the acts are real. At the moment I am still a little reluctant to fill you in on the moves, since I am not a wrestling fan, however my son is, and he is going to give us the inside information on wrestling moves to help us see it for what it is, fake.

One of the oldest moves is the ‘banana splits’, although, today, the move is now known as the ‘leg splits’. This move entails one wrestler putting both hands on the legs of the other wrestler and pushing the legs apart as far as they will go. This move will force the wrestler to put his/her own shoulders to the mat. If the wrestling move were genuine and the wrestler failed to submit, his/her legs would rip some muscles, tendons, ligaments, etc.

The ‘Cobra Clutch’ is another of the holds that would actually cause agony. The cobra move is universally recognizable as the cross chokes or arm locks. The challenging wrestler will come from the back of the other pugilist and using a single arm in the “Nelson Hold”. The opponent will then use his/her arm to tug the wrestler’s arm trying to prevent him from pulling across the neckline and choking him as a result. The back clutch, or bombard is similar but the challenging wrestler is on his back under his opponent extending his arms upward from behind.

The ‘Rock Bottom’ move entails the adversary pulling his opponents arm over his shoulder. The wrestler then pulls the opponents arm over his/her shoulder and lifts and dives forward onto the mat. During this attack, the challenger is hitting the mat head first, which if actually executed, would break bones or cause some serious pain.

The ‘Choke Slam’ entails the attacker placing a hand on the opponent, gripping him and then lifting his arm close by his opposite side, over his shoulder. Then he lifts the opponent and throws him to the mat.

The ‘Big Boot’ move is a running attack, the wrestler lifts up his boot connecting with the face of his opponent. A kick in the face with a boot in other words, which would knock a person on his/her rear any time, causing the kicked person to feel severe concussion for a while.

What makes wrestling so enthralling is the shouting, the costumes, the characters and the moves. If you think of the movie Superman, and how he dresses, you will see that without his outfit he wouldn’t have any character appeal as Superman. Likewise, the wrestlers wear costumes that make them seem like they are super heroes of the ring, punishing the villains. Each wrestler has his/her role in the ring. It is usually quite peaceful, but made to look violent!

Wrestling has rules, as well as restrictions, even though the moves are all fake. Wrestlers must respect the perimeters of the ring, as well as the colour codes in the ring. There are also styles of wrestling, which include the folk style, freestyle and Greco Romanian styles.

Each of the styles has its own set of rules, although the freestyle and folk style are somewhat similar. Usually, the styles are demonstrated so well that you wouldn’t know which style the wrestlers are using.

As with a script, most of the moves are composed and rehearsed, which means that a director is off camera using his/her hands to direct the wrestlers in the rings. For the most part, wrestling is nothing more than an act with a few exemptions like when the KAYFABE brakes down, when a real fight can break out. The KAYFABE is wrestling’s means of verbal communication.

Train Trips from San Francisco

One of the greatest things about staying in San Francisco is the close proximity to some fantastic attractions. You can lodge in one city yet visit several. You get not only the amenities of the city, but the beauty of nature is not far away from almost any point within the city. In fact, a short train ride will take you quickly to some nearby attractions that are definitely worth checking out.

One of the first train tours I want to talk about is not only a train tour but a bus and train tour. This trip goes from San Francisco to Yosemite Park. This trip involves transfers back and forth from bus to train but offers some stunning scenery and the ability to get pleasure from it without the anxiety of driving, rest stops and the need to stretch your legs.

Sometimes a little inconvenience is worth a lot more convenience later in your trip. The train portion of the tour lasts about three hours and you get to spend three hours in Yosemite. For some it is not worth the hassle and for others it is just what the doctor ordered – time to rest and relax while on the way. This is by far the most complicated of the train tours heading out of San Francisco.

The second tour is to wine country. The beauty of these tours is in the fact that you can enjoy your wine tasting event without the anxiety of who is going to drive. Everyone in your group can enjoy the outing equally. Even more than that however, is that many tour groups have made the train ride itself more the event than the wine tasting.

With pastimes such as four course meals and Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre for your entertainment it is no wonder that this has turned out to be an occasion of choice for many visitors to San Francisco. While this may be a more than moderately pricey option, it is well worth the expense. You can always cut overheads somewhere else in San Francisco to make up for the expense.

Roaring Camp Railroads provides two train rides that are both equally tempting in hugely different ways. The first is a trip back in time. This is almost certainly my favorite. On this excursion you travel to the top of Bear Mountain while listening to yarns about Roaring Camp’s part. This train tour lasts for an hour and is great fun, particularly for the little ones.

The second offering by Roaring Camp Railroads is the Beach Train, which will take you to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. The round trip from Roaring Camp to Santa Cruz and back is about three hours and well worth every penny if you have a budding engineer among your children.

Perhaps the most magical of train excursions is the Christmas Train tour from Oakdale. This trip includes Santa, his elves and a little Christmas magic. What more could you ask for? Well, I suppose that that depends on whether you made the naughty list or the nice list. This train ride is magic for everyone that partakes, young and old alike will enjoy the magic that only Christmas can bring.

Whether you are a big kid, a little kid, or somewhere in between, I am ready to bet that the magic of a train ride has not been completely lost over the years. In fact, I am willing to bet that if you allow yourself to sit back and just enjoy yourself, you will enjoy the journey as much as the destination.

The US Virgin Islands

The US Virgin Islands came into America’s possession in 1917 after Denmark sold the Danish West Indies to it for $25m in gold. At the time, the USA was worried that the Germans would gain control of the islands and use them as a base from which to launch attacks on America.

The status of the US Virgin Islands is one of an organized, unincorporated territory of the United States. This means the residents of the US Virgin Islands are US citizens, but cannot vote in US presidential elections. Therefore, US citizens do not need a passport to visit the US Virgin Islands.

The US Virgin Islands are part virgin Islands archipelago and are located in the Leeward islands of the Lesser Antilles along with the British Virgin Islands. The three main islands of this American territory are called Saint Croix, Saint John and Saint Thomas. There is also a much smaller island called Water Island. All together, there are about 60 islands with a total surface area of 133.73 square miles, although most of the islands are uninhabited.

The four main islands of the US Virgin Islands are known to their residents by nicknames. These are ‘Twin City’ (St. Croix); ‘Rock City’ (St. Thomas); ‘Love City’ (St. John) and ‘Small City’ (Water Island) and their total population was 108,612 in the 2000 census.

Since the 1960′s, the islands turned their focus from agriculture to heavy industry and tourism and the US Virgin Islands are a very popular destination for American tourists and honeymooners. It is very easy for Americans to get there because a passport is not required, the islands are only 1,730 miles east south-east of Miami, the currency is the US dollar and everybody speaks English.

The islands enjoy an arid, pleasant climate. The average temperature in the capital, Charlotte Amelie, is 33c in the summer and 30c in the winter. September to November are the wettest months and February and March are the driest. The USVI are subject to hurricanes. Hurricane Hugo in 1989 was particularly devastating, but the islands were also hit in 1998, 1999 and 2008.

Tourism is the industry that most of the islanders are engaged in and about 2,000,000 people visit every year, many of them on cruise liners. St Thomas and St Croix are the best equipped to deal with tourists offering hotels and resorts along with lovely beaches and fine restaurants. Water sports are the main activity, although tourists can also hire horses or jeeps to discover the interior of the US Virgin Islands.

Home Cures For Stress And Anxiety

A surfeit of stress can result in all sorts of problems both mental and physical. The mental problems that can arise from stress include anxiety attacks, although there can be other reasons for anxiety attacks as well. Furthermore, it appears that the tendency of anxiety attacks is on the up. This is perhaps because of the increased levels of stress that everyone experiences.

You just cannot escape tales of woe and strife in the newspapers and on the TV. It appears that news casters delight in telling us how much trouble we are in from all sorts of things from terrorists to diabetes.

They also never tire of warning us of the risks from paedophiles, rapists and murderers. It is no surprise that everybody is stressed or that some people have converted this stress into anxiety and anxiety attacks or panic attacks.

These attacks are characterized by a sudden feeling of panic for no reason at all or unwarranted anxiety. These anxiety attacks are very upsetting for those who suffer from them frequently.

There are lots of prescription drugs available, but these days many people try to do without drugs, preferring more natural remedies. One detail that many sufferers comment on, is that they feel much worse if they have a hangover.

Not that they have anxiety attacks while they are drinking, but that they get an increased number the following day, if they have a hangover. It follows then, that you may be able to lessen the frequency and the harshness of your panic attacks, if you do not drink too much.

In this vein, sufferers have also noticed that they get more recurrent and more severe attacks of anxiety if they are exhausted or worn out. Getting a good night’s sleep will undoubtedly help, if this is one of the causes of your panic or anxiety attacks.

On the dietary front, vitamin B12 has been cited as having a beneficial effect on sufferers. The vitamin B group help the brain to produce serotonin, which is the body’s happy drug. A lack of seratonin can create depression. Therefore, ensure that you get your daily recommended amount (RDA) of vitamins in the B group, especially vitamin B12. B12 is readily available in natural foods, it is even in cornflakes, just make sure that you are in receipt of enough.

Many people have had large amounts of success by limiting their use of sweeteners too. This includes natural sugar, as well as artificial sweeteners like saccharin. In order to obtain the biggest benefit you should try to monitor your mental reaction to sweeteners. Some may be perfectly OK for you while others may not.

Caffeine has also been linked with anxiety, so it would be worth attempting to do without ordinary tea, coffee and coke, to see if that makes a difference. You could try decaf, if you miss the taste of coffee or herbal teas.

Another suggested home remedy that has provided great benefits is physical activity. If you feel an attack coming on, try to ‘take your mind off it’ by distracting yourself. A simple walk might be enough or a chat with someone.

The vast majority of gardens look their best in the summer whether they yield flowers, fruit or vegetables, the same is probably correct of your garden. When the garden looks so pleasant and the weather is fine, it is nice to spend more time outside.

There are two means of approaching this: you can endeavour to extend the growing life of your garden by say a few weeks or a month or / and you can extend the number of hours you can sit in the garden every day. By taking both routes you will get the utmost pleasure from your summer garden.

The first thing you can do to extend the life of your summer garden is construct some raised growing beds. Raised growing beds heat up more rapidly and cool down more slowly than a growing bed in the soil. This is because the brick walls of the raised beds will soak up and hold the sun’s heat, warming the soil faster and retaining it.

It will also chill down more slowly as winter draws on because frost comes up from the ground and your raised beds will be that much higher so the chill will have to travel further. You can also try to heat these raised beds artificially if the first frost has not yet arrived. Apply the heating to the walls of the beds.

You may think that the expense of heating the flower beds is not worth the money, but if you have a special occasion on just at that time of the year when the weather normally takes a change for the worse, you may believe the cost worth it to have a nice floral display for that special day.

Raised growing beds are definitely the best route to take, but if for some reason you cannot build some raised beds, you could give your plants a head start by planting them in pots ahead of when the first frost is forecast for. if you have a greenhouse, you will be able to get even flowers commenced in this way. Then, you could transplant more mature plants outside when the weather allows. This will extend the life of your summer garden to the fore a little.

Another way of extending the garden’s summer life a little is to cover the plants over at night. However, you must keep an eye on the plants, because these covers are very effective. You have to be able to remove them before the sun warms up or your plants may swelter. You cannot go to work in the morning and leave your plants covered over all day.

The second way to get more enjoyment from your summer garden is to extend the number of hours per day that you can spend outside. This is easily achieved with exterior lighting. You can either run electric wiring to your garden and have lighting installed or you can use solar powered lighting, which will save you money on installation and running costs.

Once you have enough lighting, the only other things you might have to have to extend the life of your summer garden are a mosquito trap and a patio heater.

Owen Jones, the author of this article writes on quite a few subjects, but is at present involved with exterior lighting fixtures. If you would like to know more or check out some great offers, please go to our website at Outdoor Wall Lamps.

The History Of Tennis Balls

A tennis ball is very distinct and are used by millions of children and adults all over the world for playing tennis, of course, but many, many other less formal games too. They are not only the correct size for tennis, presumably anyway at 2.7 inches or 6.7 centimetres in diameter, but they also fit neatly into a hand or a dog’s mouth. Therefore people use them for playing catch, for various games of softball like rounders and for throwing for the dog to retrieve.

When I was a child, all tennis balls were white, but now you would be very hard pushed indeed to find a white one if, if indeed it is at all possible. These days, all tennis balls are day-glow colours like yellow, green and orange. Presumably this change was made for the sake of visibility on the TV screen.

The word ‘tennis’ comes from the French – ‘Tenez’ (pronounced ‘teney’), which meant ‘Take up Position’ or simply ‘Start’. The origins of tennis were almost certainly well over a thousand years ago, when it was played by monks. The racquet or racket was the flat of the hand and the ball was wooden.

No-one is really certain whether the next innovation was to wear leather mitts or to modify the ball to leather, but whichever it was, there was obviously a move to make the game less painful. When the ball changed from being wooden, it was manufactured of animal skin, most often leather, sewn up with sinews and stuffed with anything that came to hand, such as straw, wool and hair – animal and human.

The point is that these early wooden and leather balls did not bounce, so the game was very different back then. Eventually, the monks began using ‘racquets’, but they looked more like bats than modern day tennis racquets.

In Disraeli’s book, “Sybil” (1845), the plot reveals how Lord Eugene De Vere was to travel to Hampton Court to play tennis, so the game was a familiar sport then, but it took until the late Nineteen Century for the game that we know today to become formalized by a set of rules. In 1874, Major Walter Wingfield was granted the patent for the rules and equipment of ‘lawn tennis’ and not much has altered since.

The next year tennis courts were set up in the USA and then the game of tennis spread like wildfire. Wingfield set down the rules of the game and the sort of equipment to be used. The game has not changed much since then basically, but it has changed a great deal nevertheless. The shape of the court is different now and science has been applied to the apparatus to improve it.

The original ball in the late Nineteenth Century was manufactured of solid rubber and so would have been quite weighty, but at least it did bounce which instantly made the game more interesting and more lively. A bouncing ball made tennis into a more interesting game to play and a more interesting game to watch. The rubber ball allowed tennis to be a spectator sport that crowds would pay to watch.

Contemporary tennis balls have a rubberized skin, which is about eighty percent rubber, filled with air and covered by a layer of ‘hairy’ felt. The felt is important because it gives the surface of the ball more grip and can standardize the bounce too. It also gives the ball a more foreseeable flight path even in the presence of wind.

The last aspect of modern tennis balls is the air inside. This can either be pressurized or non-pressurized. Pressurized balls give a better bounce whilst new, but they lose pressure with time and so are less reliable, whereas non-pressurized balls actually improve slightly with use, which is considered a benefit.

Classic Gifts For Teenagers

Buying gifts for teenagers can get very difficult, particularly if you do not know teenagers very well. The problem with teenagers is that some are more grown up than others and if you do not know the person very well, you do not know whether to tend towards the adult or the child. However, you can always purchase a ‘little bit older’ knowing that if you have not judged the mental age correctly, then they will mentally grow into the gift.

There are a couple of classic gifts that teenagers feel are not too young for them, gifts that make them feel grown up. These gifts are not in any particular order.

A watch is always helpful – a small dainty watch for a girl and a big chunky thing for a boy. It does not matter whether it is wind-up, automatic or battery and it does not have to be one of the very expensive names, but it is better if it is pretty famous like a Seiko.

A chain, necklace or bracelet of precious metal will be appreciated by any teen, but particularly by girls. Nine carat gold or silver is not that expensive, but it will hold its value. A St Christopher can be a decent present for someone who is religious or not.

Teenagers like clothing and shoes, but it is best to keep the clothing on the casual side. Like trainers instead of shoes or a T-shirt rather than a shirt with a collar, a hoodie rather than a jacket. A leather belt is also worth considering.

Sunglasses are usually appreciated, but it is vital to get the style correct. Enquire of the parents of the teenager which designer label the teenager prefers.

Music is a classic present for a teenager, but there is such a choice of media to play it on these days. Maybe a gift voucher from a big high street record shop that also has an on line presence is best. That way, they can either buy a CD or download the music from the Net onto their MP3 player.

An atmospheric lamp can be a good present if the teenager spends a great deal of time in his or her room. Lava lamps and optic fibre lamps are just the ticket.

Something for the computer. Most teens have a computer, so you could buy a web cam, a wireless mouse or a wireless keyboard. Or a new computer game. If the teen has a laptop, they may appreciate a new laptop case or carrying bag. Laptops do come with a carrying bag, but they take quite a bashing and soon get frayed and scruffy.

A good quality pen. Not many people use fountain pens nowadays, but they are still a good gift. It may encourage the teen to tidy up his or her handwriting otherwise a famous-name biro, but it is certainly not the same as a classic fountain pen and a bottle of ink. You could add a blotter to this little package too as no-one appears to have one any more.

Crock Pot Recipes

In the USA, most people call these electric cookers crock pots, whereas in the Great Britain they are normally called slow cookers. Crock pots by Rival, DeLonghi, Hamilton Beach, Cuisinart and Toastess are particularly good examples of advanced crock pots. Some of these crock pots are programmable, which allows the cook the flexibility that the slow cookers of twenty years did not.

The first crock pots had only an on/off switch and no temperature control. This meant that the meals you could cook with them were limited, if you used your crock pot for cooking food while you were out of the house or work for eight hours or more. Modern slow cookers like those crock pots mentioned above have changed all that. These days, modern crock pots are programmable.

These modern crock pots are very flexible and with the finest of them, you can set the temperature that the slow cooker should function at and the duration of time it should cook for just like a microwave oven. For example, you could program a modern slow cooker to cook at, say, 180c for an hour and then 100c for two hours

Most people do not appreciate the features that modern crock pots have. Regrettably, there are still a lot of individuals who still believe that slow cookers are only any good for cooking rice, boiling soup or preparing cheap cuts of meat like scrag end of mutton. This is just not true any more, although manual crock pots were capable of more than that as well. Modern variable slow cookers can be used to make bread, cheesecake, custards and even sponges.

In fact, it is a good suggestion to get away from the old fashioned concepts people have about slow cookers and attempt to see them as an oven, which does not need a pot to cook in. Try the recipe below and judge for yourself.

BANANA BREAD

1 3/4 c flour 2 tsp baking powder 1/4 tsp baking soda 1/2 tsp salt 1/3 c shortening 2/3 c sugar 2 eggs, well beaten 1 1/2 c banana, well mashed, overripe 1/2 c walnuts, coarsely chopped

Sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. With the electric beater on low, fluff shortening in a small bowl, until it is soft and creamy. Add the sugar gradually. Beat in the eggs in a slow stream. With a fork, beat in 1/3 of the flour mixture, ? the bananas another 1/3 of the flour mixture, the rest of the bananas and then the last of the flour mixture. Fold in the walnuts. Turn into a greased and floured baking unit or a 2 1/2 quart mold and cover.

Place on a rack in your crock pot. Cover the crock pot, but prop the lid open with a toothpick or a twist of foil to let the excess steam escape. Cook on HIGH for 4 to 6 hours. Cool on a rack for 10 minutes. Serve Warm.
