Some Facts About Deafness

There are quite a number of innovations that came about because some of the participants were deaf. You can frequently see these innovations in every day life and you may even use some of them yourself without knowing where the notion came from. This should not be surprising given that almost ten percent of people are either deaf or hard of hearing.

In fact, some degree of deafness affects about twenty-two million US citizens and they are spread fairly evenly over the whole spectrum of the population – men, women and children; young an old; black and white; upper and lower class. Some were born with deafness and others developed it as the result of an accident or through old age or several other ways as well.

I would like to give a few examples of how people suffering from deafness have influenced our everyday lives.

The huddle in American football is not carried out only so that the opponents cannot overhear strategy, often they are quite far away. It was first arranged by a college for the deaf, because otherwise the captain would have had to shout, which of course could have been overheard by the opposition quite a far way away.

If you love baseball, then you will have heard of the Cincinnati Reds. Well, it was their deaf centre fielder, William Hoy, who began all the hand signals that you now see during every baseball game.

Shorthand is perhaps not used so much now as it once was, but it used to be essential on a secretary’s curriculum vitae not very long ago. It was or still is considered the only way to take down conversations at, say a board meeting verbatim. Shorthand was also invented by a deaf person, namely John Gregg.

Most deaf people use sign language, which is called signing. It is a shame that every spoken language came up with its own sign language, so that deaf people did not have the first truly international language, but there is a lot of work being done to that end. Signing may become the first truly internationally understood language.

Scuba divers were quick to pick up on the convenience of signing and it is widely used by divers all over the world. Scuba or deep sea divers do use an internationally acknowledged set of signals.

Being deaf is recognized as a disability and justly so, but imagine what the world of music, or even the Western world itself, would be like if it had not been for Beethoven? He was totally deaf when he wrote the Ninth Symphony.

Alexander Graham Bell was not deaf himself, but he was working on a means to help his deaf wife when he invented the telephone. He had also helped teach deaf children as well.

Eric Clapton and Peter Townsend of the former band ‘The Who’ are deaf, as is Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys. It just goes to show that deafness does not preclude you from any occupation. Deafness is a disability, but many deaf people have shown that their hearing impairment is not going to wreck their lives.

Trying to get rid of extra weight and finally giving up smoking cigarettes are much the same in a substantial way. A person with the most desire is the one who can attain either one. This motivation means there is clear determination, which is what can make a significant difference. If there exists sincere and powerful drive, then it follows you will become very motivated. Should you really wish to become a force, you will want to blend that with one more thing. This strategy is extremely personal and unique to your life and overall values, or that which you hold most important to you.

Try to find authentic and powerful reasons that may serve to energize your desire and determination. You see, you will need to have objectives regardless of what you are going to do. Whenever you work with goals, then you’re taking what’s in your thoughts and making it more real. You possess your own private unique wants in your own life. When you have a principal goal, as well as smaller goals along the way, then that allows you to build a strategy. It is merely because if you can’t know what you want, in depth, then you are going to have less idea about how exactly to achieve it. Losing weight is a string of measures you take on a daily basis, and there is far more called for than merely, eating less.

Instead of merely thinking you want to lose weight, ask yourself the reasons you genuinely wish to do it. It’s obvious that the reasons are yours alone. You might need to lose weight for specific health reasons for instance being diabetic, or trending toward diabetes. If you are obese, then perhaps your knee and hip joints are causing concerns as a consequence of body weight. You might find that determination to do it for your spouse and children so you will be around for them a lot longer. Or, understandably, you wish to avoid the numerous possible health issues that may occur as you get older. These are just a few good examples that could serve as concrete reasons to slim down.

The typical outcome for a great number of people is they lose momentum once they have began their losing weight program. What is seldom a challenge is having what feels like true desire and then getting started. What is likely to crush a great number of good intentions is sustaining the effort. Perhaps after a seven days or maybe a thirty day period, then the effort commences slipping and slacking off. The most effective method to push through the tough times when you would like to quit is your robust motivation to succeed. Sometimes you simply need to dig in much deeper, but don’t forget your end game, the end result, which are your own private reasons.

But we understand things could possibly get truly hard, and at those times our personal values and reasons can seem to be insufficient. This is common behavior and responses, and this is when positive support can make the difference. Perhaps you may want to make a better effort to maintain positive focus and simply decide to keep moving onward.

Using Self Tanning Sprays

The tanned appearance is both popular and trendy more now than at any time for decades; people like the brownish glow of their skin as it makes them feel cool and self-confident. However, at the same time, sun bathing is less and less advisable because of the increase in the quantity of skin cancer injuries. Therefore, substitutes to it have and still are being developed. Artificial tanning using tanning beds or sunless tanning by artificial methods such as body lotions, creams, gels or self tanning spray are generally obtainable.

Although the most advanced method of getting a tan is the use of a tanning bed or tanning booth, not everybody can afford to buy their own machine or go to a salon four times a month in order to have their tan refreshened, so the do-it-yourself solutions have become more and more prevalent.

A self tanning spray is a cosmetic product frequently containing DHA that can be employed at home as a sunless tanning solution. DHA is a chemical that causes a reaction with the skin’s amino acids, which in turn causes the turning of the top layer of skin a brownish colour. The outcome of a self tanning spray lasts for about six or eight days, if you are wise not to take too long in the shower, if you shun using too a harsh soap and if you do not rub yourself too hard with the towel.

Self tanning presents several challenges and so, while it is less expensive than treatment in a commercial tanning salon, it is also more difficult to get a satisfactory result. It is more difficult to achieve an even tan when using a self tanning spray. The coloring solution needs to be atomized in a thin film with great care not to overlap too much. Overlapping leads to darker tan shades on certain body areas.

Therefore, another drawback of the self tanning spray is that you may require another person’s help for the process. The back for instance is very hard to spray unless there is someone to assist you. The same problem presents itself for the back of the legs, the nape of the neck and the bottom. If you ask a friend to assist you with the tanning, it will make the process a lot easier.

You must be particularly cautious to safeguard your eyes, your lips, ears and other delicate body parts. It is also possible to stain your nails and palms when using a self tanning spray. You could remove this problem by using gloves or wet wipes whenever necessary so as not to allow the tanning agent to dry on the palms or your hands or your nails.

Then, last but not least, do not spray too much fluid on your body, because the consequence may be an unnatural orange glow or a rather uneven tan. Although many people frequently use these cans of self tanning spray in its various forms, there is no question about it that they are a lower quality resolution when compared to the superior, but more highly-priced tanning bed or tanning booth.

Anxiety depression is actually characterized by all sorts of irregular behaviour and erratic moods in the person who is suffering from it. This is usually because of specific stress triggers. Furthermore, a lot of people who tend to get easily worked up over stressful activities are actually prone to having anxiety depression. It is actually a matter of being strong-willed when it comes to facing difficult and stress-prone activities. It may be pretty hard to do at first, but trying to be calm and cool in times of extreme pressure is what will actually save your mental health from going into a downward spiral.

When it comes to effectively curing oneself of a mental illness, one must keep in mind that one has to be honest with oneself and assess what kind of depression or mental illness one actually has. Go to a reputable psychiatrist to get yourself diagnosed correctly as well to get the right depression treatment. Here are the various types of depression:

Manic or Bipolar depression – characterized by sudden and extreme changes in one’s mood where one minute the sufferer is in an elevated state of euphoria while the next minute (day or week) the sufferer is in a private hell.

Postpartum depression – characterized by prolonged sadness and a feeling of emptiness in a new mother where physical stress during child birth and / or an uncertain sense of responsibility towards the new born baby are some of the possible factors why some new mothers go through this.

Dysthimia – characterized by a perfunctory resemblance to bipolar depression, although in this case, it has been proven to be a lot less severe. However, any case of depression should be treated immediately.

Cyclothemia – is recognizable by a similarity with Manic or Bipolar depression wherein the person suffering from this mental illness can occasionally suffer from severe mood swings.

Seasonal Affective Disorder – is recognizable by falling into a rut only during specific seasons (i.e. Winter, Spring, Summer or Autumn). However, studies show that more people become depressed during the Winter and Autumn seasons. And finally, mood swings, where a person’s mood can change from happy to sad to angry in a relatively short period of time.

But the type of depression that has actually been proven to be most common among people is anxiety depression, which is actually characterized by the state of being overly anxious about things. Anxiety is a normal behaviour that’ll actually help a person cope more with certain stressful activities like a first date or a gruelling exam the following day. Anxiety actually helps you get psyched up towards facing certain “difficult situations”; anxiety therefore is actually a good thing.

Anxiety depression however, is just the opposite. However, it should not be lightly dismissed as a “case of the jitters”. Anxiety depression is in actuality an illness that can be caused by the actual biological DNA of an individual, or in other words, it can be an hereditary disease.

Also, there are actually various types of anxiety depression too, each of which has its own unique characteristics. Take for example Generalized Anxiety Disorder or GAD. This kind of anxiety depression is a lot more complicated than the average anxiety depression, in spite of it possibly being a day-to-day problem for those who suffer from this kind of anxiety depression, Generalized Anxiety Disorder actually makes the individual a lot more paranoid than normal. Anxiety attacks are more frequent, even absurdly so at times.

Suffers can be anxious even when there’s no apparent reason that calls for them to behave in such a way. People suffering from Generalized Anxiety Disorder actually show a lot of symptoms, from lack of sleep, to being unable to relax, getting tired easily, inability to concentrate on what they’re doing and suffering from depression. This kind of anxiety depression is still curable though.

You ought to consult a reputable cognitive behavioural therapist who will recommend the therapy that you require to help you to relax. Furthermore, prescribed medicines are a necessity to help these individuals battle anxiety attacks, assist them to calm down and help them relax.

Depression And Anger

Depression and anxiety are said to be the causes of uncontrolled anger. When a person is constantly worried about things they have no control over or even things they do have control over, it often causes depression. If you have the feeling, there is no way out then your depression can affect your life and cause you to sink into a spiral of despair.

Taking charge of your emotions often produces good results. If you feel that the world is crumbling down around you, then you are probably thinking negatively, which brings on depression and anxiety. In this short piece, we will reveal some techniques to help you to cope with anxiety and depression, thus relieving uncontrollable anger.

Firstly, let us examine the symptoms. Do you feel like you are going out of your mind? Do you shout in your head: ‘I can’t take it any more?’. Do you feel like someone is out to get you? Do you think people view you as mad? If you are suffering any or all of these symptoms then you are probably suffering from some form of anxiety and depression.

If you can not find a way to think differently, then you will probably explode when your emotions start to soar and your anger breaks out. Instead of telling yourself that you are out of your mind, why not tell yourself that you are temporarily emotionally disturbed and that you need to solve the problem. Review all your problem areas carefully and search your memory to see if there are answers to your problems there. A review like this, often opens doors to resources you may have overlooked.

If you feel like someone is out to get you then you might have a chemical imbalance or a mental illness. Why not visit your doctor or a mental health expert to learn more about your symptoms and find a way to gain control over your life. Anxiety and depression will play tricks with your mind but sometimes the thoughts are a result of a chemical imbalance.

If you think that people think you are going crazy, you might care to remember that most people have their own problems and don’t have time to analyze you as a person. When you walk into a room and think that people are gawping at you, you might want to remember that all people observe the things around them, checking to make sure that everything is OK around themselves before returning to their own little lives.

If you feel like you cannot take it any more, just bite your lip and buckle down to it. When times are difficult, it doesn’t mean it’s the end of the world, although sometimes it may seem this way. If you are struggling to pay bills, fighting to hold a family together, or having difficulty with your children then remember that we all have problems like these at some time or another in our lives.

Are your children driving you bonkers? If they are, take a break. Go do something entertaining or exercise. This often relieves the stress that leads to anxiety, depression and anger. Life is too short to worry about the things you do not have control over. If you have problems, the answers are within you, so it pays to review your mind.

If you are struggling to obtain your goals then you might want to break your goals down to smaller segments and work slowly to achieve them. If you set goals within reason, you will not need to stress your mind finding a way to achieve your target.

It is important to pamper yourself each day. Learn some coping techniques that will benefit both your mind and your body. If you feel overwhelmed, you might want to inhale and exhale for 10 counts.

Curling up on a couch and watching a favorite movie can benefit your mind and body, if you want to let your thoughts wander. Learn to focus on what you are doing instead of worrying about what you are not doing. This often clears the mind and helps you to relax.

If you are subject to unbridled anger, you will most likely have problems for the remainder of your life unless you learn to take control of your emotions. Remember that depression leads to uncontrollable anger.

The Japanese Martial Art Of Aikido

The sphere of Martial Arts is one of the most important contributions of Asia to the world. Who will forget Bruce Lee and the fact that he was first and foremost a martial arts competitor before becoming a movie star? Martial arts pictures are a huge hit with the ever-increasing popularity of Asian cinema like ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’ and more recently ‘The House of the Flying Daggers’.

The Chinese are the first nation that come to mind when it you think of these things, but the Japanese are just as athletic with a rich tradition of body contact sports in their history. Modern Japan still honours the martial arts by holding tournaments and promoting their sports around the world,

One of these is Aikido. It is interesting to take note of the fact that the word comes from three Japanese words from which one derives the meaning of the one word. Ai means ‘joining’, Ki signifies ‘spirit’ and Do means ‘way’. From this we can understand why Aikido lies beyond just the physical talents of it students, especially since its first advocate, Ueshiba, focused on the spiritual and philosophical improvement of his students.

In Aikido, one is not taught violence instead, one is trained to be in concord with the opponent so that you are able to defeat him more easily. This might seem strange but it really works. In attacking an opponent, the aim of the Aikido practitioner is to be one with the adversary so as to be able to attack him where he is weakest and in so doing, divert or immobilize him, but never to kill him.

This is where Aikido becomes an art form. Art is something beautiful to look at and something positive and Aikido is all that. At least one of the people involved in the combat is searching for harmony and concord can only be achieved if there is elegance in the actions. The moves may be calculated, but there is an air of elegance in performing these movements. Not a feminine grace, but a grace that emanates peace. The ‘art of peace’ is what they call it in Aikido and it is one of the most affirmative influences of Aikido on its students and to everyone else who chooses to learn about this Japanese martial art.

Some of the techniques in Aikido embrace the following.

Ikkyo is the first technique. Using this technique, you direct an adversary by using one hand to hold his elbow and one to hold near the wrist. This action is supposed to allow you to pin your opponent down to the ground.

Nikyo, the second technique, is when you perform a wrist lock which enables you to twist the arm of your opponent which will in turn cause nerve pressure.

Sankyo, the third technique, is a technique that creates upward-spiraling tension throughout the arm, elbow and shoulder. There are many other techniques but the first three are enough to give you a basic idea.

When you are studying Aikido, it is important to keep in mind that, along with building physical strength, you will need to improve your mind to be able to overpower your adversary. Just like in any art form, it takes a lot of training and discipline to perfect the art of Aikido. The chief thing to remember is, that anyone who wants to get into the art, must have the determination to give honour to the art by performing it in the best way they can.
