A great deal of people get a real kick out of making dolls’ dresses and other clothes whether they be for their own dolls, a relative’s or for sale. However, as with each hobby or craft there are a few ground rules, a couple of dos and don’ts which will help you enjoy your new hobby straight from the start until you gain enough experience to create your own judgments. In this article we will explain the fundamentals of how to make dolls’ dresses.

The first thing to do to make making dolls’ dresses easier is to think that you are making a new outfit for yourself. This is easier for you because you already know yourself and have improved from making mistakes in the past, but how well do you know the doll for whom you are going to be making clothes?

If you are manufacturing clothes for your own doll or for retail, this is not a difficulty but if you are making dresses for a friend’s doll, it would be a wise idea to see her, hold her and get a feel for her before you purchase any fabrics.

You might prefer to get a pattern for a doll’s dress if this is your first one, but you can almost certainly make it up as you go along, or be really professional and make a couple of sketches with notes first.

This is really quite useful, because you can transform the pattern in light of experience and make notes about problem regions. Who knows, once you have twenty of them you might be able to publish them.

The equipment that you will need to facilitate making dolls’ dresses is in essence the same as any tailor or seamstress would need. That is: a sewing machine, pins, needles, shears or a rotary cutter, glue, pinking scissors, thread, tracing paper, pencils and a marking chalk or pen.

You will probably need other things as well depending on what you intend , but they could include: ribbons, elastic, sequins and lace. Then you are ready to prepare your sewing machine for use. If you have not used it for a time, give it a quick service as described in the handbook that came with the sewing machine.

See your handbook if you do not know how to set up your machine to pin tuck otherwise look it up on the Net. It is a good notion with some fabrics to spray the fabric with starch before you begin this stage.

After you have finished your doll’s dress or even before that stage, you should take into account whether the style calls for any lace, ribbons, embroidery or sequins. You can create or purchase tassels if they are called for.

You can get a great deal of fun out of manufacturing dolls’ dresses for yourself or a niece and the look on their face while they comprehend that you have taken the time to make something so special and unique just for them and their doll is reward enough.

Lego sets have come a long way since my brothers and I had Lego sets in the UK. Lego UK is an off-shoot of the original Danish firm known as Lego, however, Lego UK may just as well be thought of as a separate company in its own right. Nowadays Lego sets are a great deal more than just boxes of interlocking building blocks, Lego sets are themed now to make them more applicable to a child’s particular interests. Lego is seeing a renaissance.

The name ‘Lego’ is not a real word, not even in Danish. Rather it is an acronym of two Danish words “leg godt”, which mean “play well”. It is Lego Group’s name and part of the emblem of the Lego Group.

The Lego Group was the brain child of Ole Kirk Kristiansen in 1932 and the Lego company has remained in the Kristiansen family’s control until today. The current owner of the Lego Group is Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen, a grandchild of the firm’s founder.

Lego’s mission statement is the same the whole Lego Group worldwide and that is to:

?Inspire and develop the builders of tomorrow?

Lego UK explains this by saying that their ultimate objective is ‘to inspire and develop children to think creatively, reason systematically and release their potential to shape their own future – experiencing the endless human possibility’.

The Lego Group now has more than 130 subsidiaries and branches all over the world, one of which is Lego UK. From its humble beginnings in a small Danish carpentry workplace in Bilund, the Lego Group has become the fifth largest toy maker in the world, although it is still based in Bilund.

The fundamental building block of the Lego Group is the famous eight-stud Lego block, which has remained unchanged since 1958. In fact, it is unlikely to ever change since it has been calculated that there are over 900 million different methods of mixing just six of these blocks together.

More than 900 million different ways of combining merely six Lego building blocks of one size and one colour! Think about the potential if you give a child a box of Lego building blocks of different sizes and colours.

Lego takes education very seriously and since the Seventies, the Lego Group has extended its product assortment to include younger and older people, The Duplo block is for pre-school children and are large enough for small hands to manipulate and too substantial to swallow.

For older children, teenagers and adults, there are electric motors that can be built into models which can be controlled by computer. One famous British TV presenter contacted Lego for help in constructing a house from Lego to live in.

In fact, this full-size, twenty foot tall, house was built by 1,000 volunteers using 3,300,000 bricks and everything is made from Lego building blocks. Yes, everything, including a flushing toilet, a sink with taps, the cat and the bread bin.

One of the greatest things about staying in San Francisco is the close proximity to some fantastic attractions. You can lodge in one city yet visit several. You get not only the amenities of the city, but the beauty of nature is not far away from almost any point within the city. In fact, a short train ride will take you quickly to some nearby attractions that are definitely worth checking out.

One of the first train tours I want to talk about is not only a train tour but a bus and train tour. This trip goes from San Francisco to Yosemite Park. This trip involves transfers back and forth from bus to train but offers some stunning scenery and the ability to get pleasure from it without the anxiety of driving, rest stops and the need to stretch your legs.

Sometimes a little inconvenience is worth a lot more convenience later in your trip. The train portion of the tour lasts about three hours and you get to spend three hours in Yosemite. For some it is not worth the hassle and for others it is just what the doctor ordered – time to rest and relax while on the way. This is by far the most complicated of the train tours heading out of San Francisco.

The second tour is to wine country. The beauty of these tours is in the fact that you can enjoy your wine tasting event without the anxiety of who is going to drive. Everyone in your group can enjoy the outing equally. Even more than that however, is that many tour groups have made the train ride itself more the event than the wine tasting.

With pastimes such as four course meals and Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre for your entertainment it is no wonder that this has turned out to be an occasion of choice for many visitors to San Francisco. While this may be a more than moderately pricey option, it is well worth the expense. You can always cut overheads somewhere else in San Francisco to make up for the expense.

Roaring Camp Railroads provides two train rides that are both equally tempting in hugely different ways. The first is a trip back in time. This is almost certainly my favorite. On this excursion you travel to the top of Bear Mountain while listening to yarns about Roaring Camp’s part. This train tour lasts for an hour and is great fun, particularly for the little ones.

The second offering by Roaring Camp Railroads is the Beach Train, which will take you to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. The round trip from Roaring Camp to Santa Cruz and back is about three hours and well worth every penny if you have a budding engineer among your children.

Perhaps the most magical of train excursions is the Christmas Train tour from Oakdale. This trip includes Santa, his elves and a little Christmas magic. What more could you ask for? Well, I suppose that that depends on whether you made the naughty list or the nice list. This train ride is magic for everyone that partakes, young and old alike will enjoy the magic that only Christmas can bring.

Whether you are a big kid, a little kid, or somewhere in between, I am ready to bet that the magic of a train ride has not been completely lost over the years. In fact, I am willing to bet that if you allow yourself to sit back and just enjoy yourself, you will enjoy the journey as much as the destination.

Do your interests in model remote control cars lie in high speed, fast acceleration and magnificence of form? If this is precisely what you are looking for in a model vehicle, then a model sports car is almost certainly what you are looking for. Real sized sports cars are a $4.5 billion industry with about 55,000 units being purchased every year.

Sports cars and their model counterparts are built as high performance machines, which means that they can be driven in ways that normal production line cars can not. For instance, in the case of a genuine sports car, it often takes no more than five seconds to go from 0 to 100 mph. Likewise in a model high performance gas reproduction, it often takes no more than two seconds to reach 60 mph from a dead start.

Because it is more tricky to maneuver a speeding automobile, sports cars and model sports cars are specially designed to handle best at high speeds. In deed, the word “sporty” was invented to refer to a sleek but robust design that exudes power. It was later personified to refer to the person behind the wheel or in the modelling world, the person at the remote controls.

The following is a basic glossary of sports car terminology and a basic list of sports car manufacturers (many of which have their counterpart cars in the world of model gas remote control vehicles).

- FF ? front engine, front wheel drive. The FF layout has a moderate capability for high speed handling and is seen in some models such as the Fiat Coup?, and the Lotus Elan M100.

- FR ? front engine, rear wheel drive Considered the ?classic? sports car design, the engine drives the rear wheels but keeps the weight off the back. The FR is good at drifting corners while still maintaining control. Mercedes-Benz is recognized for using this layout for its models.

- RR – rear engine, rear wheel drive With the engine at the back driving the rear wheels, weight placement on a RR layout provides outstanding traction for a car. However, without auxiliary driving aids like stability control, handling becomes difficult. These days, the only manufacturer who keeps the RR layout for its cars is Porche.

AWD – all wheel drive An AWD design provides optimum handling, making it perfect for those who are just starting to race sports cars. Audi began the widespread use of this system with the Quattro. Japanese manufacturers like Mitsubishi employed this layout to enhance handling, making it an excellent rally car.

Because of more stringent regulations in the United States, sports car manufacturers are more prevalent in Europe than in America. Nonetheless, American brands are in equal competition with their European and Asian counterparts. Some recognized manufacturers and models are:

Alfa Romeo; Alpine; Aston Martin; Austin-Healey; BMW; Bugatti; Caterham; Davrian; De Lorean; Ferrari; Fisker; Jaguar; Koenigsegg; Lamborghini; Lotus; McLaren; Maserati; MG; Morgan; Panoz; Porsche; Triumph; TVR; Vector.

If this article has whetted your desire for a sports car, go out and buy one now, if you are well-off. If not, why not do the next best thing and get yourself a 1:8 or even a 1:5 gas-powered, remote-controlled sports car?

Owen Jones, the author of this article, writes on many subjects, but is currently involved with the petrol remote control car. If you have an interest in model or toy rc vehicles, please go over to our website now at 1/5 Scale RC Cars

Christmas shopping can be seen as an absolute thrill or as a compulsory evil. It is a thrill to be out and about among the sights and sounds of the season and the jovial crowds. But for the same reasons, others dread shopping at Christmas time. These days, you do not need to leave your home much or at all to get your Christmas and holiday shopping done. That is because the Internet puts shopping at your fingertips and rather than contending with traditional retail stores, the Internet has in fact expanded the aptitude of conventional stores to sell more merchandise to a larger quantity of people in a larger number of places.

Both large and small retailers can be found at their dedicated Web sites on the Internet. Most will also offer selections that can be found in the store. However, online retail sites will frequently have additional products available, or access to additional products, that are not yo be found in the store.

Another advantage of shopping on the Internet is that it gives admission to stores situated anywhere in the world. It has therefore become easier to order a unique gift from a niche or specialty boutique store in locations that you otherwise would not be able to get to. It is also easy to do comparison shopping using ‘shop bots’ or simply by comparing prices yourself.

If Christmas shopping is done through the Internet, you have to pay careful attention to the order times and any cut-off dates to get an item delivered in time for Christmas. Based on likely volume, most sites will give a date or the number of hours within which orders have to be confirmed for assured delivery of the products before Christmas.

The precinct is a well-liked place for conventional Christmas and holiday shopping. Malls offer one-stop shopping and have a large assortment of merchandise, which can reduce the tedious searching of dozens of stores for some special item. The stores will also be beautifully decorated for Christmas, have splendid displays and a Santa Claus to interact with children. These and other activities that are usually at the precinct during Christmas and the holidays also make them an attractive setting to take children to enjoy some of the season’s delights.

To maximum benefit from shopping at the mall, you will need to know the discrepancies between the mall department stores. You will need to find out which stores have exclusive brands, which stores are reasonably priced and which are more upscale.

There are also the specialty stand-alone stores and spin-off store branches for children and adolescents that try to fill a particular niche. As an example, stores have emerged that carry only styles associated with hip-hop culture or styles that have an ‘urban’ look. So it may be worthwhile starting your shopping at a specialty store, because they are more focused, and then continue onto a department store that has a wider assortment.

Another interesting place to shop in precincts are the stand-alone kiosks that are frequently located at intervals in the open areas of a precinct where there is a lot of foot traffic. These kiosks are more likely to carry one-of-a kind items, which can inspire ideas for Christmas presents.

Also at precincts will be specialized shops that offer home/household products, books, music and movies, electronics, sports gear and shoes.

All of the types of precinct stores previously mentioned can also be found at Outlet or Factory Precincts or Warehouses, which offer lower prices. These stores often carry clearance items from their associated precinct store, merchandise with minor flaws and merchandise that is made for the outlet. Those items of merchandise frequently have slight style variations from what is found in precinct stores and may also be made from different materials.

A final place to consider for Christmas shopping is downtown businesses. They are frequently small and intimate, have unique offerings and offer more personalized support. Although city center businesses are also likely to be crowded at Christmas time, there is likely to be less of a crush of people than that found at the precincts.
