Bites From Mosquitoes And Other Insects

We all get bitten by insects from time to time – we are just too plentiful a source of food for insects to overlook. However, some people react quite badly to an insect bite, while others do not seem be all that much bothered by them. The most widespread insect bites are from mosquitoes, ants, fleas and gnats or midges and now bed bugs are coming back as well..

If you are not excessively allergic to these bites there is no need to do anything about the bite itself although you might like to eradicate an infection of ants, fleas and bed bugs. Mosquito and other insect bites usually produce an itchy, red swelling, which should go down within one to three days, although some people do have them for a lot longer.

We say that insects bite, but it is not always true. It is sloppy speech. Some insects bite (like ants), some insects sting (like bees) and other insects suck blood (like mosquitoes, fleas and bed bugs). Most people are more likely to show a reaction to blood sucking although the stings are the most painful.

Blood-sucking insects shoot some saliva into you through a pore before sucking blood. This saliva contains an anticoagulant to cause the blood flow more freely and it might contain an antiseptic and an analgesic as well to ease the pain of a possible infection or reaction to the bite. It is this saliva that causes the swelling and itching in most instances.

This is like an allergic reaction, but doctors do not consider it to be an allergy. Some people really are allergic to the bites of blood-sucking or stinging insects and they may have to be hospitalized. They suffer far more than an itchy swelling for a couple of days. You will soon know if you are allergic. You may even pass out or go into a coma.

Anyway, the main concern for most of us after being ‘bitten’ is to relieve the itching and reduce the swelling. It appears that some things work more effectively on some individuals than on others, so it is a case of testing different items until you find one that suits you and the sort of bite that is afflicting you.

Tiger Balm is effective on many insect bites for most people, but some people just need to rub a slice of lemon or an ice cube on the bite to make the condition more tolerable. If you are going to treat mosquito and other insect bites, you should do it as soon as you can after having been bitten. Strive to get that saliva out so that it does not have time to trigger your bodies natural defences.

Some creams appear to neutralize the saliva while others seem to pucker the skin enough to squirt it back out. If the saliva is back outside it cannot cause an infection although most infections like this are caused by scratching with dirty finger nails

Travelling By Train

Over the last ten years there has been a return to train travel, particularly in the United States. This might have something to do with nostalgia and romance, but most analysts put it down to a result of the in-flight bombing of Twin Towers on 9/11/2001.

The government’s and the airlines’ response to those acts of terrorism have resulted in massive hikes in the degree of security at airports and justly so, but travellers are also put off by the lengthy queues and intrusive searches at airports. This difficulty is even worse at busy airports and during vacation periods such as when schools are off.

Car travel is also an alternative, but then you have to do your own driving and that brings its own issues, especially if you are with children and especially if you are a single parent. Apart from that, travelling by train is a holiday in its own right. Your holiday starts the minute you put your bags in the rack and find your seat.

Once you have found your seat, given the kids a colouring book and a can of soda, you can sit back, relax and just snooze or look out of the window at the scenery whizzing past. Most of your problems are over until you get to where you are going. Your kids cannot get lost or wander off and they are very safe from predators.

Furthermore, trains seats are usually much more roomy than similar airline seats. Economy seats in a train are much more comfortable than economy seats in an airplane. You can also stand up and walk around which makes long journeys much more comfortable.

The backdrop is also better from a train than a plane. After all, clouds are clouds are clouds, but you can see all kinds of things out of the window of a train. There are also sleeping and dining carriages to break up the journey, but there is normally also attendant service in your seat, if that is what you would like. Simply push the button and someone will come to take your order.

Have you heard of the Orient Express, the Flying Scotsman or the Trans-Siberian Express? What romantic visions they summon up. Contemporary trains may not have the nostalgia or the steam locomotives of the Thirties, but they are still fantastic to travel on.

You can book your seats on a train journey much the same as you would on a plane, which means that if you stand up to go to the bathroom or dining carriage, your seat will still be unoccupied when you get back. This is a huge plus point, because it is annoying when someone takes your seat.

The next time that you make a decision to go away, think again about travelling by train. You can leave your car at the station or you can even take it with you on the train, if you like. You will not regret having given the rail network a chance, because the likelihood are that you have forgotten how handy and inexpensive they are.

The US Virgin Islands

The US Virgin Islands came into America’s possession in 1917 after Denmark sold the Danish West Indies to it for $25m in gold. At the time, the USA was worried that the Germans would gain control of the islands and use them as a base from which to launch attacks on America.

The status of the US Virgin Islands is one of an organized, unincorporated territory of the United States. This means the residents of the US Virgin Islands are US citizens, but cannot vote in US presidential elections. Therefore, US citizens do not need a passport to visit the US Virgin Islands.

The US Virgin Islands are part virgin Islands archipelago and are located in the Leeward islands of the Lesser Antilles along with the British Virgin Islands. The three main islands of this American territory are called Saint Croix, Saint John and Saint Thomas. There is also a much smaller island called Water Island. All together, there are about 60 islands with a total surface area of 133.73 square miles, although most of the islands are uninhabited.

The four main islands of the US Virgin Islands are known to their residents by nicknames. These are ‘Twin City’ (St. Croix); ‘Rock City’ (St. Thomas); ‘Love City’ (St. John) and ‘Small City’ (Water Island) and their total population was 108,612 in the 2000 census.

Since the 1960′s, the islands turned their focus from agriculture to heavy industry and tourism and the US Virgin Islands are a very popular destination for American tourists and honeymooners. It is very easy for Americans to get there because a passport is not required, the islands are only 1,730 miles east south-east of Miami, the currency is the US dollar and everybody speaks English.

The islands enjoy an arid, pleasant climate. The average temperature in the capital, Charlotte Amelie, is 33c in the summer and 30c in the winter. September to November are the wettest months and February and March are the driest. The USVI are subject to hurricanes. Hurricane Hugo in 1989 was particularly devastating, but the islands were also hit in 1998, 1999 and 2008.

Tourism is the industry that most of the islanders are engaged in and about 2,000,000 people visit every year, many of them on cruise liners. St Thomas and St Croix are the best equipped to deal with tourists offering hotels and resorts along with lovely beaches and fine restaurants. Water sports are the main activity, although tourists can also hire horses or jeeps to discover the interior of the US Virgin Islands.

Car Detailing Advice

By tradition, middle class suburbanites would wash the car on Sunday morning before leaving for a drive with the family in the afternoon. Some people took this task seriously, but for most it was twenty or thirty minutes washing and polishing the outside and five minutes with the vacuum cleaner inside. Nowadays a great deal more people expect a proper cleaning that in those days was reserved for the well-healed.

However, having your car detailed or valeted is still not cheap, typically costing $75 for an average clean on an average sized car in average condition. When you begin talking about a grimy SUV that has recently been used to transport the school football team, detailing properly at a good establishment can cost $300-$400.

Not a great deal of drivers can afford to pay that out frequently, particularly with the price of petrol being what it is, so here are a couple of car detailing pointers to help you do it yourself (or get the kids to do it for you).

i] Take out anything that can be removed and vacuum the carpets. Then wash the windows on the inside and clean the seats, upholstery and dash with an apposite cleaner, especially if the seats are covered in leather upholstery. Wash the items you removed, dry them and replace. Put a stick of slow-release air freshener in the glove compartment and close all the doors.

2] Hose your car down, especially in the wheel arches and under the bonnet to remove the worst of the muck and soften up anything that has gone rock-solid. Do not use a really strong power washer, ie one that is attached to a powerful pump. These power washers can blast grit away so hard that it scratches the paintwork. A regular hose attached directly to the mains is fine

3] Check the mud under the wheel arch and blast it off with a slightly more powerful jet if yu have to. Do the wheels too, if they are bad. Once you can no longer see any build up of sludge, you can move on to the next stage.

4] Either mix a bucket of warm soapy water or attach a soap dispenser to your hose pipe. It is worth investing in proper car cleaner, because kitchen washing up liquid could be a little harsh for your car’s paintwork.

Do not try to save money on the amount of detergent you use, follow the manufacturer’s directions and apply it with a sponge or mitten. If you are using a bucket, be ready to renew the water several times – you do not want to be rubbing grit into your paintwork.

Sponge down the car in sections starting with the roof and then rinse it off immediately. So, wash the roof, rinse it; wash a door panel, rinse it; move on and around your car until you get to the bottom – the bumpers and wheels.. You have to rinse instantly to stop a film of soap drying onto the paintwork, especially on a warm day.

Re-rinse the entire car in case you missed something. If you purchased a car wash with wax included, you are done, but if you would like the best finish, now is the time to wax on and then wax off.

Porsche 977 Carrera

A new Porsche 911 is always fascinating because it’s interesting to see how after more than 40 years of development the Porsche team still manages to bring alterations and improvements to this iconic exemplar.

The new 997 blends the silky modern looks of the 996 series with the fashionable retro styling of the older 911′s. The front end is finished with round lights and separate parking/fog/indicator lights. This modification, coupled with wider hips echoes the last of the air-cooled 911′s, the 993. Other changes in the body shell are the new door handles, wing mirrors and the trendy cut of the rear wings into the bumper/lights.

Even if the 997 looks a lot like the preceding model, the 996, the new car is in point of fact 38mm wider which makes for a more forceful look. With each new model brought out, Porsche has tried to reduce the drag co-efficient helping the 911 glide through the air more efficiently thereby aiding performance. The same thing has been done with the new car, and if we compare the 993 Cd of 0.34 to the 997`s 0.28, we can see how far the aerodynamic game has moved on. The latest body shell and rear wing combine with new under body paneling to also offer increased levels of down force for this latest evolution of Porsche’s best.

The latest Porsche model has the best handling 911 ever. Improving a car’s firmness helps ensure that the suspension can work more efficiently and although not making such a quantum leap as the team did with the 996, Porsche improved torsional rigidity by 8% and added as much as 40% more strength.

For their new model car, Porsche wanted to enhance crash safety provisions so they added two new air bags, which are located in the side of each front seat back-rest and are calculated to protect the thorax. They also kept the earlier two front and two side airbags, which means that now there are six air bags in total. For the same reason, that is crash safety, the toughened body shell features additional protection such as a more widespread use of very high strength steel.

The latest model is also 50 kg heavier than the 996. The reason is that current crash safety regulations sort of compel vehicle manufacturers to produce new cars of increased weight, despite the prevalent use of a large range of weight saving measures, such as an aluminum bonnet.

Aside from the crash safety advancements, much of the additional weight can be attributed to the higher standard specifications of the new cars. The power to weight ratio is analogous with the latest car offering 233 bhp per tonne against it’s predecessors 238 but the new model’s superior aerodynamics must help it achieve Porsche’s claimed performance figures, which are identical to those of the 996.

The eighth largest city in the United States and the second largest in California, San Diego is a very popular place to visit. Unusual Uses For The Indoor Bug Zapper

I don’t know whether you have ever used a handheld, indoor bug zapper, but I think that they are awe-inspiring. I’m talking about the handheld kind that looks like a child?s plastic, toy tennis racquet. They come in two basic types. I rather the rechargeable bug zapper, for the reason that batteries end up up costing more than the indoor bug zapper itself, although you could always buy rechargeable batteries, but then they are pricey as well.

My wife and I like to spend time in the garden. We meet friends there, dine there and in general loaf about outside, as do most folks about here, when they are not working. What’s more, it?s much cooler outside than inside. A comfortable chair, a few snacks, a cool drink and a book or a companion and life does not get much better. In fact, it’s idyllic.

That is until about six or seven o’clock when the first squadron of mosquitoes have judged that the sun’s rays have lost enough strength that they will not evaporate and they come out looking for blood. Some evenings are worse than others, of course. More often than not, the mosquitoes are quite bearable, particularly given that I have discovered the indoor bug zapper. (I don’t know why it is referred to as an ‘indoor bug zapper’, it is just as useful outdoors as in)..

It’s not that I like to slaughter things, but I find it hard to have compassion for mosquitoes. Nevertheless, I do get a certain amount of enjoyment from seeing and hearing mosquitoes and other bugs literally blow up with a flash and a spark as they come into connection with the electric and ground wires of the indoor bug zapper. These electric bug zappers can pack quite a charge, particularly if the batteries are new or the pack is completely charged.

The other day, I found a new use for my handheld, indoor bug zapper. I’ll tell you how it came about. I was in the garden, as normal, and my bug zapper was close at hand as the first wave of mosquitoes was due. I had my book in one hand and the bug zapper on my lap, when my wife asked me to go to the shop for her. No problem, therefore, I set off on the five minute walk.

I was half-way there when I realized that I had the indoor bug zapper in my hand, but it was not worth taking it home and beginning the journey again. Anyway, on my return trip, I had my small bag of groceries in one hand and the indoor bug zapper in the other, when a local tyrant of a dog came running out of a garden right for me. This has occurred often and, although he has never bitten me yet, it is quite intimidating. He stood there glaring at me with teeth bared and his ‘pack’ of sundry neighborhood pals came out to surround me and join in.

I don’t really know what the best course of action is in this situation. I have tried holding my ground, but the intimidation just goes on and I have tried to keep walking, but he gets worryingly close by on occasion. This time, I unexpectedly lashed out with the indoor bug zapper and just caught him on the snout. Well, I’m not sure whether it hurt him, it did not seem to too much, but it gave him a very nasty shock in more ways than one, I can tell you! He leaped about four feet into the air as if he were on a pogo stick and then ran for all he was worth with all his pals following him. It was very gratifying after six months of aggravation from this dog.

Anyway, I don’t take my indoor bug zapper everywhere with me, but I will in future, if any more local dogs bother me. I know it works a treat. I have seen that one since, but he keeps far away from me and doesn’t utter a sound. I think I would take my indoor bug zapper with me, if I were wandering in an unknown part of town or the park nevertheless.

How To Run A Wedding Car Business

Have you ever thought about running a wedding car business? Although it can be demanding, because you do not want to let anybody down on their big day, it is also fascinating and exciting.

Some of the advantages are that you get to own good-looking cars – maybe a Rolls Royce or a Bentley and they are tax-deductible; you meet new people under happy circumstances and you are in the position to help them have a wonderful wedding day.

It is a very demanding industry, because you always have to bear in mind the desires of your clients and think about how you can realize and expand their’ wishes. That is difficult enough, but you also have to stay competitive. I hope that the following tips will be helpful.

1] Take care of the conditions under which you keep your cars. If you can afford to garage them, they will not collect dust and bird droppings so the paintwork will look better for longer. Do not have a gravel drive, because of possible damage to the coachwork of the vehicles.

2] Get one or two really nice vehicles. You will need to do a bit of research to find out what couples in your area like, but as a rule of thumb a Rolls Royce or a Bentley are sure bets. Or maybe a stretch limousine. Old vehicles go down well too. Build up your fleet of vehicles gradually but increasingly. Offer your clients as much choice as you can reasonably afford to do.

Many wedding couples will not only require the wedding car, but also vehicles for the guests. Many of them want limousines or old vehicles for their wedding day. But a lot of other vehicles are required for the guests. Be adaptable and consent to bedeck the cars according to the couple’s wishes with flowers and ribbons.

2] Employ good, compassionate personnel. A fully trained chauffeur is a necessity, but a military style driver can add to your firm’s image.

3] It is a good idea to offer different packages or elements that a couple can use to build a package. So, you could offer transportation from the bride’s house to the church as one element. From the church to the restaurant as another element and from there to the chosen hotel, the airport or the railway station, as another element.

4] Make sure that your clients know exactly how long they have exclusive use of the cars for. This is useful for them, so that they know precisely how long they have to take photos, eat or chat.

Transportation plays a huge and fundamental part in any wedding day celebrations. In fact, poorly timed or scruffy transportation can ruin a wedding day. If you let that happen, your firm’s standing will suffer badly, particularly in a town or village. You will need a high sense of responsibility; reliable, well-trained, sensitive staff and high quality vehicles that look the part. White wedding cars are popular, but other colours are acceptable, especially for the guests.

My First Night In Pattaya, Thailand

It was seven-ish and I was sitting in a nice-enough room overlooking the front entrance to the pub above which I had just moved in. The pub was the Pig and Whistle on Soi 7 in Pattaya. Across the way was a big hole, which they were hoping to construct a hotel in and next door to that, right opposite me, was a small bar with one lady sitting on a stool outside it. Not that there was a wall there, it was open on two sides. The Soi was nice and peaceful, I thought. I also thought that I might go and sit in that little bar and talk to that woman, if my friend was late, because I would definitely see him arrive from two metres away, the width of the Soi.

So, I went to the bar in the pub at 19:15 to await my friend who said he would meet me at 20:00. It was much busier than thirty minutes earlier but not noisy and I sat at the bar. The first thing a barmaid did was say hello, give me a menu and step back. I did not really want to eat, I only wanted a beer as I presumed we would be dining together later, but I wanted to read the menu anyway.

‘A pint of Boddington’s', I said. It arrived and the girl started laying a place for me. I tried to say that I was not hungry, but it was no good. Like in Spain, most people eat and drink at the same time. All the while the girl was smiling at me. Then she said: ‘You live upstairs? My name Charli. What you want to eat?’. So, I gave in and ordered something and rice.

‘You first time in Thailand? You no can eat. Too spicy’, she said with a grin. ‘Oh’, I replied, ‘but I want to try. ‘I put only 50-50 for you’, she declared and went.

I battled my way through that meal and it took a Boddingtons and a bottle of water. Charli had been right, it was too hot for first-time foreign visitors and she had reduced the chilis by 50%. I have always heeded a Thai’s counsel on food ever since.

I changed seat to by the window to see what was going on as it was dark by 19:30 and I was curious. Within thirty minutes Soi 7 had transformed itself completely. I could see hundreds of ladies and tourists walking about. I wanted to go out and join in or at least sit in the quiet bar across the lane, but I’m ashamed to say that I was too frightened, so I sat put, rivetted to the Pig like a rabbit in a hunter’s flashlight.

My friend arrived on time and after we had been talking for an hour, he said: ‘Drink up, I have someone I want you to meet’. This was it, we were going into that mele. A waitress opened the door for us and the racket and the heat were tremendous. Particularly the noise. Every metre at least two or three girls would yell: ‘Hello, sexy man, you want a drink’. Trying to say no politely to each request was impossible, so I just stuck close by to my pal.

Fortunately, we only had about fifty metres to stroll and we sat down in another bar. My friend said hello to several women and then said, this a girl I have been going out with for some time. I was flabbergasted as I had never heard him talk about her, ever. She was gorgeous, but could not speak English, so I sat in the din in silence. Not for long through, as my friend said, I have a blind date for you and he introduced another girl to me who was equally beautiful, but with whom I could speak a little. She was captivating and I was captivated. The din seemed to die away, but it was only because I was listening to my new friend. The four of us had the best time and the best food I had ever had in my forty-nine years of existence.

Saint Croix: One Of The US Virgin Islands

Saint Croix is the biggest of the US Virgin Islands although the capital city, Charlotte Amelie, is located on St Thomas. Saint Croix itself has two towns Frederiksted (pop. 830) and Christiansted (pop. 3,000). The name of the island derives from the original Spanish name given by Christopher Columbus in 1493 – Santa Cruz or ‘Holy Cross’. As Santa Cruz, Saint Croix gets a lot of mention in swashbuckling stories of pirates and buccaneers sailing on the Spanish Main.

The populace before the Europeans arrived was Arawak and Carib and they had probably been there since about 5000 BC. After 1493 the population of the Caribbean became embroiled in a 100 years war with the Spanish and the kind of people living on the island changed forever.

Saint Croix has been owned and therefore predominantly occupied by the Spanish, The British, the French, the Dutch, the Maltese and the Danish all of whom had slaves and plantations

The slaves were manumitted in 1848, but many chose to stay on Saint Croix. Descendants of slaves still live on the island. The total populace of the island is now roughly 60,000.

English is the official language and is the most commonly spoken, although there is also some Spanish, French Creole and Virgin islands Creole, better known as Crucian, which is spoken by most inhabitants in informal situations.

This Hispanic segment of the Crucian populace is mostly of Puerto Rican lineage. The US bought Vieques from Puerto Rico during the Second World War and evicted its inhabitants. Many moved to St Croix because of its similarity to Vieques. These people have integrated well, but also kept a few of their old customs. They usually speak a mixture of Spanish and Crucian English in a distinctive form of Spanglish.

Continental Americans make up about 13% of the population and mostly live on the eastern side of St Croix. Arab Palestinians are also a sizeable minority owning most of the petrol stations and supermarkets on St Croix. Other modern immigrants have come from the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and the Philippines.

There has been some tension between immigrants and those calling themselves ‘real Crucians’, but it has largely evaporated due to intermarriage. There have been attempts to define a ‘real Crucian’.

The issue seems to have been sorted out when in 2009, the proposed U.S. Virgin Islands Constitution voted by the Fifth Constitutional Convention laid down three definitions of U.S. Virgin Islanders: “Ancestral Native Virgin Islander”, who have ancestral ties (and their descendants); “Native Virgin Islander”, who were born on the island (and their descendants); and “Virgin Islander”, who are any United States citizen who has lived in the region for five years.

Christianity, in the guise of Protestantism is the main religion, although the Hispanic community is Roman Catholic. There are also small groups of Jews and followers of Rastafari, Islam.
